Montr\u00e9al, April 18, 2023 \u2013 <\/span><\/b>More than <\/span>100 trophies in 28 categories<\/span><\/b> will be awarded to Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s creators and publishers as the SOCAN Gala returns to Montr\u00e9al <\/span>on May 7, 2023, at La\u202fTOHU<\/span><\/b>. F<\/span>ollowing two online editions and a one-year hiatus, the 33rd edition will celebrate the past two years of accomplishments by music creators and publishers, with those from the past, the present and the future all equally celebrated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event will be hosted by the flamboyant and colourful drag queen, <\/span>Barbada<\/span><\/b>, while the talented <\/span>Chlo\u00e9 Lacasse<\/span><\/b> will complete the role of musical director, promising thrilling surprise performances and musical tributes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the SOCAN Achievement Awards, the SOCAN Cultural Impact Award will be presented to <\/span>Jean-Pierre Ferland<\/span><\/b> for his hymn to the hope and emancipation of a nation, \u201c<\/span>Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin,<\/span><\/b>\u201d and the most famous performer of the song, <\/span>Ginette Reno<\/span><\/b>, will receive the SOCAN Special Achievement Award.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another legendary creator from Qu\u00e9bec, the inimitable <\/span>Plume Latraverse<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>will see his long and extraordinary career celebrated with the SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Award.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Songwriter (Performer) Award and Songwriter (Non-Performer) Award will go to two creative duos, <\/span>Roxane Bruneau<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Mathieu Brisset, <\/span><\/b>and hitmakers <\/span>Banx & Ranx<\/span><\/b>, respectively<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the audiovisual category, two Screen Composer of the Year awards will be presented to a pair of rising stars: <\/span>Nathalie Bonin<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Cristobal Tapia de\u202fVeer<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>who have each accumulated countless successes and rewards for their compositions for screens of all sizes over the last two years. Bonin’s work was featured in such productions as the award-winning documentary <\/span>Women Warriors: The Voices of Change<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Tapia de\u202fVeer is perhaps best known for his Emmy-winning work on season two of <\/span>The White Lotus<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additional invaluable contributions of film composers will be recognized in several categories related to their outstanding creative work in film and television.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Still in the Achievement Awards category, the work of SOCAN\u2019s publisher community will be celebrated with the Publisher of the Year Award going to <\/span>\u00c9ditions Bloc Notes Musique,<\/span><\/b> while the International Award will go to the Montr\u00e9al-based production duo, <\/span>Demy & Clipz,<\/span><\/b> who are behind the worldwide hit \u201cLa Corriente\u201d by Grammy Award winner Bad Bunny, a song that has so far amassed more than a billion streams across the world’s music platforms.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year will also mark the return of SOCAN Classic Awards<\/span>1<\/span> with trophies going to \u201c<\/span>Toune d\u2019automne\u201d <\/span>by <\/span>Les Cowboys Fringants<\/span><\/b>, \u201cParce qu\u2019on vient de loin\u201d by <\/span>Corneille<\/span><\/b>, \u201cLa D\u00e9sise\u201d by <\/span>Daniel Boucher<\/span><\/b>, \u201cPoint de mire\u201d by <\/span>Ariane Moffatt<\/span><\/b>, \u201cBalade \u00e0 Toronto\u201d by <\/span>Jean Leloup<\/span><\/b>, \u201cR\u00eaver mieux\u201d by <\/span>Daniel B\u00e9langer<\/span><\/b>, \u201cAmalgame\u201d by <\/span>Les Respectables<\/span><\/b>, and \u201cOn jase de toi\u201d by <\/span>Noir Silence<\/span><\/b>, while the band is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Francophone, Anglophone and International Popular Song Awards will go to the world’s most-played songs over the past two years, and the winners of the Special Awards will also be announced, including the Breakthrough Award, Breakthrough Female Screen Composer Award (for the first time), the Country Music, Electronic Music, Viral Music, Hip-Hop Music Awards, and the Hagood-Hardy Award (global music) and Jan V. Matejcek Award (new classical music).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every year, SOCAN honours organizations that consistently uphold fair music licensing and the rights of music creators and publishers to earn their fair share from the use of their music. This year’s SOCAN Partner in Music Award will be jointly presented this year to <\/span>T\u00e9l\u00e9-Qu\u00e9bec<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Sph\u00e8re M\u00e9dia<\/span><\/b> for their ongoing commitment through the outstanding TV show <\/span>Belle et Bum<\/span><\/b> which celebrated its 20th season this year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each of the Achievement Awards winners will receive <\/span>\u201cThe SOCAN,\u201d<\/span><\/b> the first and only major music industry trophy in the world that is also a musical instrument.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
