Montr\u00e9al, May 7, 2023 \u2013 <\/strong>Tonight marked the long-awaited return of the SOCAN Gala at Montr\u00e9al\u2019s La\u00a0TOHU. More than 500 songwriters, composers, screen composers, producers, music publishers, and music industry professionals gathered to celebrate the 33rd<\/sup> annual SOCAN Gala, during which over 100 trophies were awarded to highlight the work of Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s creative talent over the past two years.<\/p>\n

Hosted with glamour and humour by the flamboyant drag queen Barbada<\/strong>, the SOCAN Gala began with a powerful and moving performance by Jeanick Fournier<\/strong> \u00a0of the timeless \u201cUn peu plus haut, un peu plus loin,\u201d<\/strong> celebrating the incredible work of Jean-Pierre Ferland,<\/strong> recipient of this year\u2019s Cultural Impact Award.<\/p>\n

Many other Achievement Awards were presented during the gala, including the Special Achievement Award to Ginette Reno<\/strong> for her illustrious career; the Lifetime Achievement Award to the great Plume Latraverse<\/strong>; and the Songwriter (Performer) and Songwriter (Non-Performer) awards, were given, respectively, to two successful creative duos: Roxane Bruneau<\/strong> and Mathieu Brisset,<\/strong> as well as hit-makers Banx & Ranx. <\/strong>The Screen Composer Award was presented to two outstanding creators, Nathalie Bonin<\/strong> and Cristobal Tapia de\u00a0Veer<\/strong>, celebrated for their incredible composition work on both the small and big screen over the past two years. The Publisher Award went to Bloc Notes Music Publishing<\/strong>, an outstanding publishing house in the music ecosystem of Qu\u00e9bec and Canada. And the International Award went to Montr\u00e9al-based music production duo Demy & Clipz<\/strong>, responsible for, among other things, the worldwide hit \u201cLa Corriente\u201d by Grammy-winning mega-star Bad Bunny.<\/p>\n

Breathtaking Performances and SOCAN Classics<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several musical performances marked the gala with unique and moving moments. Among them, Mara Tremblay<\/strong>, Catherine Durand<\/strong>, Marie-Pierre Arthur<\/strong> and Martin Deschamps<\/strong> joined their voices to pay tribute to Plume Latraverse by performing a selection of his most emblematic songs. Ines Talbi<\/strong>, Marie-Denise Pelletier<\/strong> and Lunou Zucchini<\/strong> embraced the task, with respect and humility, of reminding us how Ginette Reno<\/strong> has impacted Qu\u00e9bec with her greatest songs. The excellent \u201cchameleon band\u201d Qualit\u00e9 Motel<\/strong> performed a daring medley where they adapted, to their unique sound, a selection of award-winning works from the various categories dedicated to screen music. Pierre Kwenders<\/strong>, Ingrid St-Pierre<\/strong> and St\u00e9phanie St-Jean<\/strong> paid tribute to Paul Pich\u00e9<\/strong>, who was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame during the Gala \u2013 much to the delight of the artist himself, and everyone in attendance. The extremely talented Chlo\u00e9 Lacasse<\/strong> was the Gala\u2019s musical director.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s event also marked the return of the SOCAN Classic Awards[1]<\/a>..Trophies were presented to \u201cToune d\u2019automne\u201d by Cowboys Fringants<\/strong>; Corneille<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cParce qu\u2019on vient de loin\u201d; Daniel Boucher<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cLa D\u00e9sise\u201d; Ariane Moffatt<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cPoint de mire\u201d; Jean Leloup<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cBalade \u00e0 Toronto\u201d; Daniel B\u00e9langer<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cR\u00eaver mieux\u201d; \u201cAmalgame\u201d by The Respectables<\/strong>; and Noir Silence<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cOn jase de toi.\u201d<\/p>\n

Special Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the specialized music categories,\u00a0 global music was honoured with the Hagood Hardy Award, given to Pierre Kwenders<\/strong>; the Jan V. Matejcek Award for New Classical Music went to Linda Bouchard<\/strong>; the Country Music Award went to the energetic Sara Dufour<\/strong>; the intriguing Ouri<\/strong> won the Electronic Music Award; veteran Souldia<\/strong> won the Hip-Hop Music Award; and the Viral Music Award, presented by Gowling WLG<\/strong>, went to Patrick Watson<\/strong> \u2013 for his song \u201cJe te laisserai des mots,\u201d which has accumulated more than 4.8\u00a0billion views worldwide on TikTok. The Breakthrough Award went to dance sensation R\u00eave<\/strong> and rising star Jay Sc\u00f8tt<\/strong>; and the first-ever Breakthrough Female Screen Composer Award went to the talented Ana\u00efs Larocque<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Popular Music and Screen Composition <\/strong><\/p>\n

A total of eleven Popular Music Awards were presented during the evening, to the songwriters and publishers of the most popular French-language songs of 2021 and 2022: \u201c\u00c0 ma mani\u00e8re,\u201d \u201cSi jamais on me cherche,\u201d \u201cGu\u00e9rir nos m\u00e9moires,\u201d \u201cCopilote,\u201d \u201cTok\u00e9bakicitte,\u201d \u201cL\u2019\u00e9cho,\u201d \u201cT\u2019es belle,\u201d \u201cO\u00f9 sera le monde…\u201d, \u201cJe suis comme toi,\u201d \u201cElle n\u2019entend plus battre son c\u0153ur,\u201d and \u201cVous \u00eates ici.\u201d Two Anglophone Popular Music Awards were given to \u201cFlowers Need Rain<\/strong>,\u201d sung and played by Preston Pablo<\/strong> and Banx & Ranx<\/strong>, as well as \u201cLost<\/strong>\u201d by Jonathan Roy<\/strong>. The International Song Award went to \u201cTu t\u2019en iras<\/strong>,\u201d co-written by La\u00a0Zarra<\/strong>, Zacharie \u201cSoke\u201d Raymond<\/strong>, Yannick \u201cKny Factory\u201d Rastogi<\/strong>, and Benny Adam<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Gala also saluted the precious talent of screen composers and publishers. Among the evening\u2019s winners, Michel Cusson<\/strong> walked away with two awards: one for his collaboration with Miklos Simpson<\/strong> on District 31<\/em> in the category Fiction or Dramatic Series, the other for Unit\u00e9\u00a09<\/em> in the category Television Music \u2013 International. Composers Jason Sharp<\/strong> (The Decline<\/em>), Tim Rideout<\/strong> (L\u2019\u00e9chapp\u00e9e<\/em>), Luc Pronovost<\/strong> (Destination Ski<\/em>), Nicolas Savard-L\u2019Herbier<\/strong> (Cochon Dingue<\/em>), and Raphael Reed<\/strong> (Crisis<\/em>) all won trophies recognizing their invaluable contributions to these productions.<\/p>\n

The Post-Synchronization Award, given for the first time at the Gala \u2013 to the SOCAN reproduction rights client whose work has been reproduced in the greatest number of post-synchronizations on digital or traditional audio-visual platforms in 2021 \u2013 went to composer Philippe Leduc<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Partner In Music Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, the essential contribution of SOCAN-licensed companies or organizations for the fair use of music was recognized with this year\u2019s Partner in Music Award, given to T\u00e9l\u00e9-Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong> and Sph\u00e8re M\u00e9dia<\/strong> for the long-running TV show Belle et Bum<\/em><\/strong>, and its ongoing commitment to showcasing a diverse roster of up-and-coming musicians. The show celebrated its 20th<\/sup> season this year.<\/p>\n
